The Open Differential and Limited Slip Differential

The tasks for differentials in the automobile gearbox required to perform include the delivery of power to the wheels of the motor vehicle from the engine, serving to act as a gear reduction in vehicles in which rotational speed is addressed before delivery to the wheels and the ability to power up all of the wheels.

The car wheels in a turn are required to operate at different speeds, because the wheels on the inside often cover a shorter distance and slower speed in comparison to those on the outside. If you own a rear wheel drive or front wheel drive these will spin independently as there is no connection between them. The differential parts like the gearbox differential case is used to adjust to the speeds at which wheels operate. Differentials can split torque according to two different outputs which will allow the vehicle wheels to spin at varying speeds.


One of the most basic types of differential systems is the open differential in which similar levels of torque are provided to each wheel. The power that is delivered to each wheel is largely dependent on traction and other mechanisms. When vehicles are provided with an increased amount of traction in relatively dry conditions, the power will depend on the engine as well as gear manipulation.


Another type is the limited slip differential. They are highly beneficial for SUV and other automobiles with off road functions as more torque will be applied to the slipping wheel allowing one to maintain a greater degree of control. When power is supplied from the engine via the automobile gearbox or transmission it delivers the necessary amount of torque to the wheels allowing it to turn as required when reducing speed.
